A Hortus Poeticus Christmas
We’re sure you’ve felt it too: the inevitable promise of the season as the evenings draw in and mornings are finally met with a bite in the air. We see how our land on the South Downs is slowly, inexorably, peeling back the layers, removing the excess and preparing to slow down for Winter.
In the barn, armed with a pot of tea, a tray of tiffin and the first chunky knits of the season, Team HP are discussing how our design approach shifts with the seasons. We feel it most in the transitions in and out of the colder months, particularly as we move from the abundance of late Summer and Autumn, and begin to tune in to the beauty of foliage, seed heads, lichen and what is essentially the bones of the land around us during Winter.
We note each year how strange it is that, culturally, we charge towards the end of the year with indulgence and decadence at the forefront of our minds, and how this lies in such contrast with what the land around us is showing us.
Some of our most treasured Winter memories often involve peeling off wet gloves after trying to hold onto a melting snowflake, kicking off the mud stuck to our boots, the mistletoe hunt, finding and roasting chestnuts, collecting holly for the table and, of course, the begrudging or beguiling depending on your point of view, Boxing Day walk.
We wanted to create a collection this year that feels reminiscent of these memories - wrapped in nostalgia and a deep respect for the land.
Our decorations are an ode to the connection with nature that drives our story here at Hortus. From our collection of wreaths and garlands, to dressing houses and creating bespoke installations for brands, we keep the land, the season and the story they tell together at the heart of our work.
Kind flowers, for a kind planet. A Hortus Poeticus Christmas.
There is something timeless about a traditional Christmas wreath. Rich with texture, fragrance and the colours of the season, the Charles Dickens evokes crackling fires, candlelit windows and the warmth of gathering together as the festive season settles in.
Handcrafted at our Hampshire flower farm, this wreath is abundant with seasonal foliage and natural adornments in warm, festive tones. Layers of evergreen scent and texture are complemented by carefully chosen details that celebrate the richness of the season, creating a welcoming piece for your front door or home. Finished with a beautiful ribbon.
Designed in the Hortus Poeticus style, the Charles Dickens is romantic, natural and deeply rooted in the landscape of an English winter. A celebration of tradition, seasonality and the simple beauty of bringing nature closer to home.
Bring the beauty and abundance of the winter garden indoors with our hand-crafted Christmas Foliage Garland.
Made with a richly gathered selection of seasonal evergreen foliage, each garland is thoughtfully arranged to create a natural, abundant feel. Choose from a warm traditional palette with the Charles Dickens, frosted silver tones with Winter’s Light, or naturally dried ochre and browns with The Ginger Bread.
Drape it along a mantelpiece, dining table, staircase or doorway to add an atmospheric touch of Christmas to your home. Each garland is made to order and embraces the natural character of the foliage, so no two will be quite the same.
